Back massage
Classic back massage
The following techniques are used in the classic back massage:
- Stroking – is used in the beginning and at the end of the massage session. The distinguishing characteristic of gliding strokes is that it is applied horizontally in relation to the tissue, generating a tensile force. During gliding strokes, light pressure remains on the skin and moderate pressure extends through the subcutaneous layer of the skin to reach muscle tissue but not so deep as to compress the tissue against the underlying bony structure.
- Rubbing – is a manoeuvre similar to touch. The substantial difference is the intensity and force applied. The most firm pressure has a direct effect on the lymphatic and venous circulation, resulting in the stimulation of the lymphatic vessels and the venous return. This technique eliminates salt, swelling, inflammatory exudates, hematomas and muscle tension.
- Kneading is focused vertically on the body with the main purpose to lift tissue, applying bend, shear and torsion force. Kneading is very good for reducing muscle tension. The lifting, rolling and squeezing action affects the spindle cell proprioceptors in the muscle belly. As the belly of the muscle is squeezed, the muscle feels less tense. Kneading is a method of “tricking “muscle into relaxation.
- Tapotement techniques require that the hands or parts of the hand administer springy blows to the body at a fast rate. The blows are directed downward to create a rhythmic compression of the tissue. When massaging the back, the kidneys area is avoided. Tapotement causes better blood supply to the tissue and leads to muscle contraction. The repetitive stimulation causes the nerve to fire repeatedly, stimulating the nerve tract.
- Vibration is a very powerful stroke if it can be done long enough and at intensity sufficient to produce reflexive physiologic effects. It can be used to stimulate muscles by applying the technique at the muscle tendons for up to 30 seconds.
Relaxing back massage
As anyone who has ever suffered from a bad back will know the effects can be absolutely devastating. Usually the origins of back pain are of muscular tension.
Poor posture and tight muscles can seriously affect the movement of the joints which results in compression and even further restriction of the movement. Help maintain a relaxed back through regular massage, focusing on squeezing and pressing the muscles outward.
The key is gentleness. Our Sweedish relaxation massage for back usually lasts for 30 minutes and includes the use of relaxation oils with scent or unscented.
